Looking for a resort that’s more wild jungle than poolside glamour? Sandos Caracol Eco Resort in Playa del Carmen is a one-of-a-kind escape for families who want adventure, nature, and non-stop activities without straying too far from the all-inclusive comforts we all love. We stayed here in February with our 7-year-old son, and here’s the real scoop — from a mom and travel agent’s point of view.
Get Ready to Walk (And Explore!)
Let’s get this out of the way early: Sandos Caracol is BIG. Like, almost 1,000 rooms big, and spread out across lush jungle trails, wooden bridges, and winding walkways. It’s not compact — if you like everything close by, this probably isn’t the resort for you. But if you enjoy exploring, this layout is a dream. You can discover something new each day, from hidden cenotes and mangroves to quiet pools and jungle paths. That said, bring comfortable shoes, and if you have younger kids, a stroller is a must.
Room Categories & Our Family Stay
There’s a room type for every traveller and budget, but here’s a quick overview — including the one we stayed in:
- Family Section – Eco Family Superior – We stayed in this room and loved it! It came with a king bed and bunk beds, which was perfect for our son. The room was spacious, with lots of storage, and a large bathroom with a separate toilet area — a super helpful feature for families sharing a space. These rooms are located throughout the family section of the resort and offer easy access to pools, restaurants, and activities.
- Royal Elite Ocean Front – Located closest to the beach, these rooms have been modernized as eco-rooms powered by solar panels. They also include access to Select Club amenities, which is a nice bonus.
- Select Club (Adults Only) – This section is exclusive to guests 18+ and offers a quieter experience. It’s the furthest from the beach, but includes its own adults-only pool, restaurant, and private beach club with waiter service.
Wildlife Around Every Corner
One of the most magical things about Sandos Caracol is how close to nature you feel every day. We saw monkeys swinging through the trees, coatis trotting along pathways, and even a few agoutis (imagine a jacked-up guinea pig). Wildlife is everywhere — and it’s respected. The resort partners with Coco’s Animal Welfare, offering support for local animals including a cat café, and they let the natural wildlife roam freely.
There’s also a small petting area with donkeys, pigs, and chickens, which younger kids might enjoy.
Waterpark Fun (Kid-Approved!)
Our 7-year-old was in waterpark heaven! While he wasn’t quite tall enough for the biggest slides, he had endless fun on the medium-sized slides and splash area. There are actually three separate slide areas designed for different age/height groups, and even adults were having a blast on the biggest slides.
Bonus: It’s all included — no extra charge for the waterpark!
Cultural Entertainment & Festival Nights
Sandos Caracol does a fantastic job of weaving in local culture and authentic experiences. One of our favourite moments was the Mayan show at the cenote — it was beautiful, dramatic, and so unique. Definitely worth attending if it’s on during your stay.
They also host fun theme nights, including a White Party on the beach with music and dancing under the stars, and festival-style evenings serving up authentic Mexican street food and snacks. It adds a festive, immersive vibe that really sets this resort apart.
A Beach with Character
Sandos Caracol does have a long and wide beach, but it’s important to know: this isn’t a soft, walk-right-in kind of beach. The shoreline is rocky in many areas, and water shoes are essential for getting in comfortably. That said, the water is crystal clear and beautiful, and we still found smaller sandy areas perfect for relaxing and playing.
Food: Kid-Friendly, But Not for Foodies
There are lots of dining options across the resort — from buffets to à la carte restaurants — and you won’t go hungry. But if you’re looking for a true chef-driven culinary experience, this probably isn’t the resort for you.
That said, there are plenty of options for picky eaters. We saw pizza, pasta, hot dogs, fries, burgers, and all the usual kid-approved favourites at most meals.
Room service is only included in certain upgraded categories, so that’s something to consider if breakfast in bed or late-night snacks are part of your vacation vibe.
Eco Vibes (and a Few Mosquitos)
One of the coolest parts of this resort is its commitment to eco-friendly practices. Only 30% of the land is developed, leaving the rest as natural jungle and mangroves. It feels wild, lush, and totally immersive.
They have reusable cups, no plastic water bottles (you get a refillable jug in your room), and have eco-upgraded rooms in select categories. They also don’t allow photo vendors with captive animals, which is a small but important detail for responsible travel.
There were a few mosquitos, but nothing major during our stay — still, it’s a good idea to bring repellent just in case.
Watch for the Timeshare Pitch
When you check in, you’re directed to guest services for an orientation. It’s genuinely helpful… but can also turn into a timeshare presentation (or “vacation club,” as they call it). Be polite but firm if you’re not interested, because the pitch can take up half a day if you agree to it.
Our Favourite Things
- The Secret Quiet Pool – A peaceful, hidden gem where we loved unwinding as a family.
- The Cenote – On-site and swimmable! Clear, refreshing, and beautiful.
- Wildlife everywhere – Seeing monkeys up close was a total highlight for our son.
- Family activities galore – We played ping pong, explored trails, played beach sports, and even went out on a catamaran — and we still didn’t do it all!
- Festival nights and cultural shows – Added so much richness and fun to the overall experience.
Final Thoughts
Sandos Caracol isn’t for everyone — especially if you’re all about short walks, gourmet food, or lounging on silky-soft sand. But if you’re into eco-travel, jungle vibes, family fun, and a resort packed with things to do, it’s a fantastic choice with a ton of value.
We came home happy, relaxed, and full of stories. And most importantly? Our son is already asking when we can go back.
