Types of Cruises & the Best Time to Take Them

Cruising is one of the most exciting and convenient ways to see the world—whether you want to soak up the sun in the Caribbean, explore European cities, or adventure in the Arctic. But with so many cruise options, how do you choose the right one?
In this guide, I break down the different types of cruises and the best time of year to take them, so you can plan the perfect trip. Bonus: If you’re new to cruising, don’t miss the link to grab your free cruise planning guide below!

1. Ocean Cruises

Best for: Families, couples, first-time cruisers, groups Popular Destinations:
  • Caribbean
  • Mediterranean
  • Alaska
  • Hawaii
  • South Pacific
  • Asia

What They Offer:

Large ships with pools, spas, restaurants, shows, kids’ clubs, and more. These are the “floating resorts” ideal for travelers who want a mix of relaxation and entertainment.

Best Time to Take an Ocean Cruise:

  • Caribbean: December to April (to avoid hurricane season)
  • Alaska: May to early September (best weather and wildlife viewing)
  • Mediterranean: May to October (pleasant temps and fewer crowds outside of peak summer)

2. River Cruises

Best for: Adults, food and wine lovers, cultural travelers

Top River Destinations:
  • Danube River (Austria, Hungary, Germany)
  • Rhine River (France, Netherlands, Switzerland)
  • Seine River (France)
  • Mekong River (Vietnam, Cambodia)
  • Nile River (Egypt)
  • Amazon River (South America)

What They Offer:

Small ships, scenic sailings, and guided tours. River cruises dock in the heart of cities and small towns, giving you more time to explore.

Best Time to Take a River Cruise:

  • Europe: April–June, September–October (milder weather and fewer tourists)
  • Mekong or Nile: November–February (dry and comfortable)
  • Amazon: June–November (lower water levels = better wildlife viewing)

3. Expedition Cruises

Best for: Adventure seekers, photographers, and nature lovers Top Expedition Cruise Destinations:
  • Antarctica
  • Galápagos Islands
  • Arctic Circle
  • Patagonia

What They Offer:

Small vessels with expert-led excursions, such as kayaking, hiking, and wildlife safaris. These cruises are immersive and often all-inclusive.
Best Time to Take an Expedition Cruise:
  • Antarctica: November–March (summer in the Southern Hemisphere)
  • Galápagos: Year-round; best marine life sightings from June–November
  • Arctic: June–August (warmest temps and longest days)

4. Specialty Cruises

Best for: Niche interests, themed groups, or travelers seeking luxury

Types of Specialty Cruises:
  • Themed Cruises: Wine, wellness, music, foodie-focused sailings
  • Luxury Cruises: Smaller ships with high-end service, gourmet dining
